2019 Canadian Pictures of the Year event cancelled due to COVID-19

Canada NewsWire

WHITEHORSE, April 6, 2020 /CNW/ - The National Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) regrets to announce that the 2020 NPAC Conference, trade show and the marquee event, the 2019 National Pictures of the Year Gala planned for April 24-25, 2020 in Montreal will not take place due to the COVID-19 situation.

"It is extremely disappointing to not be able to come together to celebrate the incredible achievements of the 2019 class of photojournalists," says Crystal Schick, NPAC President. "This year's nominees and winners have a global collective body of work that celebrates the high quality and ethical standards of photojournalism in Canada."

NPAC will be announcing the winners via press release on April 25th and each nominees work will be included in a photo book celebrating the work. NPAC is committed to still awarding winners will be awarded with cash prizes. "We are so thankful to our sponsors, may of whom have stepped up for our organization to be able to fulfil a reduced prize money structure despite our not being able to host the awards event," says  NPAC Executive Director, Ali Ledgerwood. "These are unprecedented times that are creating many degrees of angst throughout our country. To be able to continue to award prizing to our winners is as a direct result of our sponsors continuing to see the importance of photojournalism in our country." Due to the economic impact of cancelling the conference and trade show, exact prize values will be determined prior to the announcement of the winners.
