The members of the boards of trustees of these museums will help promote Canada's heritage

GATINEAU, QC, March 20, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced the appointment of 19 part-time members to the boards of trustees of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Canadian Museum of History, the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. These 12 women and 7 men, from such sectors as education, the arts and finance, reflect Canadian diversity and their appointment respects gender parity. These appointments are the result of the open, transparent and merit-based selection process in place in the Government of Canada.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights

– Benjamin Nycum (Nova Scotia), four-year term effective April 1, 2018

Mr. Nycum is CEO of the architecture and planning firm William Nycum & Associates Limited and an adjunct professor at the Dalhousie University Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

– Mark L. Berlin (Ontario), four-year term effective April 1, 2018

A current professor of practice at McGill University's Institute for the Study of International Development, Mr. Berlin also serves on the Board of Governors for the Law Commission of Ontario.

– Pardeep Singh Nagra (Ontario), three-year term effective June 1, 2018

Mr. Nagra is manager of the Employment Equity Office for the Toronto District School Board and currently serves as executive director of the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada.

– Ana Serrano (Ontario), three-year term effective June 1, 2018

Managing director of IDEABOOST, Canada's only digital entertainment accelerator, Ms. Serrano is also chief digital officer of the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto.

– Gail Asper (Manitoba), four-year reappointment effective immediately

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Ms. Asper is president of The Asper Foundation. She is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Manitoba Theatre Centre Advisory Council.

Canadian Museum of History

– Jennifer Pereira (Saskatchewan), four-year term effective March 12, 2018

Ms. Pereira is chair of the Fund Development Cabinet for the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon and a partner with Robertson Stromberg LLP.

– Amanda Kingsley Malo (Ontario), three-year term effective March 12, 2018

Ms. Kingsley Malo teaches French immersion at the Rainbow District School Board, as well as English as a second language to Syrian refugees with Sudbury Project Hope.

– Rodney Nelson (Ontario), four-year term effective March 12, 2018

A professor at Carleton University's Centre for Initiatives in Education, Dr. Nelson is the CEO of the Global Governance Group, Vice Chair of the Indigenous Learning Centre, Chair of First Plan Benefits Canada and the former chair of the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Canada.

– William Robert Young (Ontario), three-year term effective June 1, 2018

A former parliamentary librarian, Dr. Young is an accomplished author and historian who has co-written and edited books and articles on Canadian history.

– Andrea T. Bobkowicz (Quebec), three-year reappointment effective immediately

A member of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of History, Ms. Bobkowicz is an investment advisor with National Bank Financial and the chair of the Finance Committee for the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum

– Patricia-Jean Giguère (Manitoba), four-year reappointment effective immediately

A recognized leader in the area of volunteerism in the arts, Ms. Giguère is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of History and a director at Business for the Arts.

National Gallery of Canada

– Mandeep Roshi Chadha (Quebec), four-year term effective April 1, 2018

Co-owner of Olives en folie, Ms. Chadha is a member of the Board of Directors for the Blue Metropolis Literary Festival in Montréal and a former member of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada.

– Adad Hannah (British Columbia), three-year term effective April 1, 2018

Vancouver-based artist Adad Hannah has exhibited and produced his work at museums across Canada and around the world. His videos, photographs and installations are in the permanent collections of many public institutions across Canada, and internationally at the Musée Rodin, Museo Tamayo and many others.

– Dominique Hamel (Quebec), three-year term effective June 1, 2018

With practical and research experience in audit, management accounting and risk management, Ms. Hamel received her Masters in Accounting and Finance (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2010. She recently worked for National Bank's head office in Montréal as an internal auditor of financial markets.

– Terrence Burgoyne (Ontario), three-year term effective June 1, 2018

Mr. Burgoyne has over 35 years of business law experience and is general counsel with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, with responsibility for the firm's legal affairs and risk management, including conflicts and compliance matters.

– Lisa M. Browne (Newfoundland and Labrador), four-year term effective June 1, 2018

The CEO of Stella's Circle, a St. John's-based charity organization, Ms. Browne also co-chairs the NL Study Tour of the Governor General's Canadian Leadership Conference and is an associate for the Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development. In addition, she is a member of Memorial University's Centre for Social Enterprise Advisory Council.

Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

– Caroline Lavoie (Quebec), four-year term effective March 1, 2018

A member of the McCord Museum marketing committee, Ms. Lavoie has worked in public affairs and communications for over 10 years. Ms. Lavoie is also chair of the Board of Directors for Entre-Maisons Ahuntsic.

– Salima Ebrahim (Alberta), four-year term effective June 1, 2018

Ms. Ebrahim was executive director of the Banff Forum for over 2 years and has more than 15 years of experience in policy, strategy and external relations. She currently works for the City of Edmonton as Director of External Relations.

– Mona Kumar (Ontario), four-year term effective June 1, 2018

Ms. Kumar is a multilingual lawyer with broad practice experience in business law gained in-house at leading companies, including as a director and corporate secretary of a private subsidiary of a multinational company. Ms. Kumar's previous experience also includes working in private practice as an Associate at McMillan LLP. She is an active member of the Mississauga community and serves as a board member of the Alzheimer Society Peel.

National museums are independent organizations that are part of the Canadian Heritage portfolio.

National museum board members are appointed by the Minister of Canadian Heritage with the approval of the Governor in Council.

In 2016, the Government of Canada adopted a new approach to Governor-in-Council appointments. This approach uses open, transparent and merit-based selection processes that result in the identification of high-quality candidates who truly reflect Canada's diversity.

The new approach requires a selection process for both full-time and part-time positions.
