4 Elements of A Holiday Safety Plan from Project LISA

TORONTO, Dec 11, 2018 /CNW/ - The holiday season is stressful under the best of conditions, but when someone is in an abusive relationship this extra tension is overwhelming and dangerous. 95% of spousal homicide victims in Ontario are female. Taking extra precautions and staying safe during the holiday season is critical.

As a part of a regular safety plan you should always have:

  • Contact information for friends and family.
  • Code words that communicate that you need support or help from your friends or family.
  • Contact information for safety resources, including hotline numbers, and legal resources such as Project LISA, which provides free legal support to women in abusive relationships in the GTA.

During the holidays add these 4 Elements to your safety plan:

  1. A Communication Plan -  Consider who, among your friends and family, will be available during the holidays if you need support or help.
  2. A Travel Plan - Give the itinerary of where you will be traveling to a trusted friend. Keep copies of travel documents such as passports, drivers licence and visa with you. Keep a stash of money in a safe place for emergencies.
  3. A Self-Care Plan - Try to come up with ways to get some time alone during the holidays. Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Do your best to get adequate rest, nutrition, exercise, and emotional support.
  4. An Emergency Plan - Your regular safety plan may be inadequate if tensions escalate and become dangerous. Be sure to consider your location, resources, and available support.
