Freedom Mobile and TransLink Partner to Provide Wireless Connectivity in SkyTrain Dunsmuir Tunnel

Freedom Mobile customers can now talk, text and stream while riding the SkyTrain between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations

CALGARY, Alberta and VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shaw Communications Inc. and TransLink today announced that they have teamed up to provide Freedom Mobile customers with underground connectivity on the Metro Vancouver SkyTrain. Beginning today, Freedom Mobile customers have access to fast LTE service at Waterfront, Burrard, Granville and Stadium-Chinatown stations — as well as in the tunnels that connect them — so that they can use their phone in the tunnel exactly as they would above ground.

“Underground wireless connectivity means that Freedom Mobile customers now have more opportunity to text friends and loved ones, post to Instagram or respond to emails in the tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations,” said Paul McAleese, President, Wireless, Shaw Communications. “Our partnership with TransLink will make it possible for Freedom Mobile customers to stay connected and get even more value out of their service during their commute.”

TransLink and Freedom Mobile are working to expand wireless connectivity throughout the SkyTrain footprint so that customers will be able to text, surf and stream throughout their commute. These enhancements come at no cost to TransLink or their customers.

“The tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations is one of the busiest SkyTrain sections, so we’re pleased to have partnered with Freedom Mobile to offer wireless connectivity to our mutual customers throughout their downtown ride,” says Derrick Cheung, Vice-President Strategic Sourcing and Real Estate, TransLink. “We know that uninterrupted connectivity is important to transit users and we’re pleased that these kinds of partnerships can improve our customers’ experience at no cost to transit customers or taxpayers.”

This announcement is the latest in a series of initiatives that Shaw and TransLink have worked on together to enhance the experience of thousands of Metro Vancouverites on their daily commutes, which includes providing Shaw Go WiFi to all passengers on the SeaBus platforms and ferries. This development reinforces Freedom Mobile’s commitment to providing Canadians exceptional value to better meet the needs of its customers.
