Entries now open for National Newspaper Awards

Canada NewsWire

TORONTO, Dec. 15, 2017 /CNW/ - The National Newspaper Awards (NNAs) are now accepting entries for the 2017 competition.

Entries are being accepted in 21 categories between Dec. 15, 2017, and Jan. 15, 2018.

To be eligible, an entry must have been published first in 2017, in English or French, by a Canadian daily newspaper (in print, online, tablet or mobile) or by a digital publication that has met criteria established by the NNA Board of Governors in accordance with the rules of entry, which can be found here.

Changes applicable to this year's contest include:

  • The Newsfeature Photo category has been eliminated and a new category, Photo Portfolio/Photo Essay, has been created. Entrants in this new category may submit up to 10 photographs: either a group of unrelated images published over a period of time or a picture-story or essay on a singular subject or theme, published at the same time. Full category descriptions can be found here.

  • While supporting letters have always been allowed, entrants are now strongly encouraged to provide such letters of support with helpful information for judges that may not be apparent from the entered work itself, including such matters as the circumstances that led to the work, any challenges associated with production of the work, and relative resources available to the entering organization in producing the work. Full entry guidelines and instructions can be found here.

  • The option for judges to select a third finalist, in addition to the winner, in some categories has been eliminated. Judges will select one winner and two finalists in all categories.

  • The rules pertaining to eligibility of entrants as well as work that has been done with outside funding, involvement or support have been revised. Rules of entry can be found here.

  • Organizations that are not eligible to enter the Local Reporting category have been identified in the description of that category. Local Reporting entries are now subject to the usual fee for entering. Full category descriptions can be found here.

This is the 69th year of the awards, which were established in 1949 to encourage excellence and reward achievement in daily newspaper work in Canada. Finalists will be announced in mid-March, and winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday, May 4, 2018, in Toronto.

The entry fee is $40 + HST per entry for organizations on the NNA Benefactor List, and $50 + HST per entry for other entrants.

More information about the awards program can be found here:
