These scams typically involve deceptive marketing techniques by entities masquerading as Yellow Pages and using a variation of the company's brand. There may be a request to fill out a form with an "update" to business information. There may be a person(s) representing themselves as Yellow Pages who requests business information and a signature from business owners. Other organizations may send business owners a fake invoice for a specified amount of money which will sometimes be accompanied by false threats of collections.

Before signing any advertising agreements or making any payments, Yellow Pages provides the following advice for businesses:

• Invoices for Yellow Pages advertising should carry the company name of either Yellow Pages Digital & Media Solutions Limited or Yellow Pages Limited.
• Yellow Pages never conducts business by sending unsolicited faxes.
• Verify with your previous Yellow Pages representative that the company or representative contacting you is legitimate.
• Yellow Pages is a Canadian-owned and operated company. All legitimate invoices will carry a Canadian billing address.
• Be wary of emails that ask you to click an unspecified link to receive a special offer or refund on your advertising.

"Any communication or solicitation you receive which seems out of the ordinary or different should be carefully reviewed," said Fiona Story, Director, Corporate Communications at Yellow Pages. "Often, a fake invoice, solicitation or claim can be detected by thoroughly reading the document before signature. Fraudulent correspondences should be reported to the Competition Bureau of Canada at 1 800 348-5358 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495-8501. Those who suspect they may be victims of such a scam are also encouraged to contact the local chapter of their Better Business Bureau for assistance.
