CRANBURY, N.J. --

CURE Media Group, the nation’s leading consumer digital and print media enterprise focused entirely on patients with cancer, will honor four individuals who have made a difference in the field of ovarian cancer tonight at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.

“The inaugural Ovarian Cancer Heroes® recognition program celebrates incredible individuals who work every day helping patients and families. Honoring these outstanding caregivers and medical professionals reflects our dedication to the cancer community,” said Michael J. Hennessy Jr., president of MJH Associates, parent company of CURE Media Group.

Keynote speaker Patrick Dempsey, actor, cancer advocate, Breakaway from Cancer Ambassador, and Dempsey Center founder will join in honoring the following four remarkable individuals during tonight’s gala:

  • Carolyn Berson, RN, BSN, serves as a nurse navigator for the gynecologic oncology program at John Muir Health in Walnut Creek, California. With over 30 years of experience as an oncology nurse, Berson helps her patients overcome challenges by offering guidance during their treatment. She also assists patients with postoperative management, symptom management and quality improvement using evidence-based practice.
  • Laurel Rice, M.D., is chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology and professor in the division of gynecologic oncology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Since 2006, Rice has served on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Sue Friedman, D.V.M, was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33 and later learned that she carried a BRCA2 gene mutation. Her journey with cancer inspired her to establish Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, a national nonprofit organization devoted to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC). As the executive director of the organization, Friedman empowers the HBOC community through education, research and advocacy.
  • Susan Leighton co-founded Lilies of the Valley, a gynecologic cancer support and awareness group, after she was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer. Her organization supports women with gynecologic cancers in the Tennessee Valley and Huntsville, Alabama, areas. Leighton has also raised her voice for the cancer community on Capitol Hill, where she testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense and met with members of Congress. She has co-authored articles and web-based support programs on long-term cancer survivors.

The Ovarian Heroes Recognition program is sponsored by TESARO, an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company.

“TESARO is proud to join Cure Media Group to celebrate the heroes in the ovarian cancer community – today and everyday. TESARO is devoted to bringing transformative therapies to women facing ovarian cancer, as well as illuminating the importance of addressing patients’ emotional and support needs that go beyond treatment,” said Kristin Ainsworth, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, PR & Advocacy.
