INK Research has updated the INK Canadian Insider Index methodology to change the rebalancing frequency from semi-annual to quarterly. The change is being made to in order to measure insider reactions to changes in economic and geo-political events more quickly.

In a sense, the election of Donald Trump marked a turning point for markets. While the global financial crisis may well have been the event that marked the end of an era where market forces more-or-less ruled, the Trump election appears to be signalling that government policy is now going to play a bigger role. Of course, it is not just the US. One only has to look at the response of China to the Wuhan coronavirus to see the power that state actions can have on people and ultimately market behaviour. Moreover, these actions are becoming significant in terms of the impact on markets due in part to associated central bank reaction functions.

Consequently, going forward we are going to capture insider reactions to global events every three months instead of six. We expect this will provide us with improved insight into what is on the minds of insiders as global events unfold.

The updated methodology is now in effect and the next rebalancing of the Index will be on February 21, 2020. INK will announce constituent changes that will take place during the rebalancing on or around February 14th. For more on the Index, please visit our Index website
